This collection of children's poems from the late Victorian era offers a bright and cheerful picture of London at the height of its imperial glory. The author, Felix Leigh, was a prolific writer whose drawings and poems appeared for many years in the magazine Boy's Own Paper. The illustrations were by Thomas Crane (1843–1903) and Ellen Elizabeth Houghton (1853–1922). Crane created the ornamental elements for the pages, while Houghton provided the illustrations. Thomas Crane was the older brother of Walter Crane (1845–1915), a revolutionary figure in children's book illustration who insisted on combining text and illustrations to create a cohesive, harmonious whole. Houghton was a cousin of the Crane brothers, who were also renowned as artists who pioneered the use of Christmas cards.
