(School of the Art Institute of Chicago);

"Brer Rabbit turnt 'er aloose, en down she come - ker-swosh!"

"'Brer Tarrypin, pleace lemme go!'"

"'Ah-yi! You oughter ax me dat fus', Brer Coon'"

"Brer Rabbit fotch a wiggle, he did, en lit on he foots"

"'Ef you git any mo' sense, Son Riley, you'll be de ruination ev de whole settlement'"

"De little Rabs, dey promise dat dey won't open de do' fer nobody"

"He sorte hunch Brer Possum in de short ribs, en ax 'im how he come on""

"'I dunner w'en I bin so sorry 'bout anything, ez I is 'bout Brer Fox nice long tail'"

Milo Winter (1888–1956) is known for his magnificent illustrations for the Chicago printing and publishing house Rand McNally. He illustrated primarily children's and young adult books, such as Gulliver's Travels by Jonathan Swift, Alice's Adventures in Wonderland by Lewis Carroll, Uncle Remus by Joel Harris, Collected Fairy Tales by Hans Christian Andersen, Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea by Jules Verne, The Three Musketeers by Alexandre Dumas, A Christmas Carol by Charles Dickens, Treasure Island by Robert Louis Stevenson, and The Silver Skates by Mary Mapes Dodge. His illustrations are precise in detail, melodic and in tune with the text, original, and beautiful. I would like to highlight the artist's ability to convey individual qualities and emotional makeup of animals in anatomically accurate images, which is especially noticeable in the amusing illustrations for Nights with Uncle Remus by Joel Chandler Harris.

At last matters grew so uproarious that the grandsire's red kerchief came down from his face with a jerk

Gretel hid her face in her mother's lap and tried not to cry

One of the ill-favored men by the fire had shuffled toward the dresser, and was ordering a mug of beer

Even around the warehouses and docks there was no bustle, no shouting from one to another

The father was "sitting up" at last

He thrust in his hand and took out stocking filled with the long lost treasure

Gretel has won the Silver Skates!
