Abril. Manuel Reina, "Las lilas". 1900

Octubre. Jose de Velilla, "Las campanillas". 1900

José Arija Saiz (died 1920) was a Spanish drawer, illustrator, and graphic artist. José Arija took the compositional principles and ornamental richness of Spanish engraving and transformed them into a new plastic form, reviving ancient techniques with a new language. His art is an evolutionary bridge, where the traditional medieval national aesthetics of ornament served as the foundation for the development of contemporary Spanish modernism. His obituary, published in the Heraldo de Madrid on January 23, 1920, stated that Arija studied decorative arts with Arturo Mélida; following a competitive examination, he was appointed engraver at the Royal Mint; in 1895, he was awarded the Order of Charles III, and in 1904, he received a gold medal in the decorative arts section of the National Exhibition of Fine Arts. He was a regular contributor to Blanco y Negro, where he always demonstrated good taste and a high artistic culture. At the time of his death, Arija was a professor at the School of Arts and Crafts in Madrid. The artist's open spirit, nurtured in the strict discipline of classical Spanish engraving, and his mastery and grace in this field led him to the position of president of the engraving section of the Circle of Fine Arts (Círculo de Bellas Artes). It was noted Arija was a perfect caballero, a pleasant conversationalist, who won the affection and sympathy of artists and colleagues.

(Joaquín Xaudaró)
(Blanco y Negro)
1899-1908

La caida de la hoja. 1899

Joaquín Xaudaró (1872–1933) was a graphic artist, illustrator, and caricaturist. He was born in the Philippines into the family of a military engineer of Aragonese descent. In 1883, the family moved to Barcelona, where Joaquín graduated from the Trias Academy (Academia Trias de Barcelona). After completing his military service at the age of 25, Xaudaró began a professional career as an illustrator, collaborating with magazines such as Blanco y Negro, Gedeón, and ABC. He developed a highly distinctive style characterized by use of vibrant colors, crisp linework, and expressive perspectives. The artist's greatest asset—his insightful and good-natured humor—was particularly evident in his portraits and caricatures of people from various social strata of the era. Having gained recognition in Spain, he traveled to Paris, the center of the avant-garde art world. He lived there for seven years, until the outbreak of the Great War. During this period, Xaudaró collaborated with leading French publishing houses and published his drawings in prominent French periodicals, all while continuing to work for the Spanish press. One of his most famous albums from that time was Les péripéties de l’aviation (Adventures in Aviation), which reflected one of his passions: aviation. Upon returning to Spain, he created his first animated films and worked in Lleida and later in Huesca. In 1921, he returned to Madrid and resumed his collaboration with the newspaper ABC—this time as the creator of a daily caricature. Thanks to the constant presence of a small, pointed-eared dog in his drawings—which he included to set the mood for the viewer—and his brilliant portrayal of the personalities of his contemporaries, he became one of the most renowned figures in the history of Spanish graphic art.

(Emilio Sala y Francés)
(Blanco y Negro)
1899-1904

Emilio Sala y Francés (1850–1910) was a Spanish painter, portraitist, graphic artist, and educator; he was an honorary member of the Spanish Academy of Fine Arts in Rome and a caballero of the Order of Isabella the Catholic. In 1861, Emilio Sala began taking private lessons from his cousin and mentor, the artist Plácido Francés y Pascual (1834–1902), who taught at the San Carlos School of Fine Arts in Valencia (Escuela Superior de Bellas Artes de San Carlos). He officially enrolled in the San Carlos School in 1864 and graduated in 1871. That same year, a historical painting he submitted to the National Exhibition in Madrid was awarded a second-class medal. Between 1871 and 1885, the artist lived in Madrid, working primarily on portraits and interior murals commissioned by members of the financial elite, the aristocracy, and the royal family. In 1885, Emilio Sala traveled to Rome as an honorary pensioner of the Royal Academy of San Fernando. Rome did not meet his expectations, however, and in March 1886, he moved to Paris; there, he completed a historical painting begun in Italy—Expulsión de los judíos de España (The Expulsion of the Jews from Spain)—and exhibited it at the 1889 World's Fair. The Parisian public failed to grasp the painting's historical context and to appreciate the artist's neoclassical style. In contrast to the Parisians, the Madrid audience—with its affinity for historical painting—received the work with enthusiasm. Following the 1890 National Exhibition in Madrid, the painting won a gold medal at the World's Fair in Berlin, and on December 7, 1892, the Spanish state acquired the canvas for the Prado Museum. During his time in Paris, Sala became interested in the study of light and color—it was there that he developed the style that defined his artistic individuality. Upon returning to Madrid, the maestro devoted himself primarily to writing technical and theoretical works and to illustration. In 1896, Luca de Tena offered him a position as a graphic artist for the fledgling illustrated magazine Blanco y Negro. Sala's publications in the magazine are, in essence, more replicas and reproductions than as illustrations in the narrow sense of the term. By a ministerial decree dated January 24, 1907, Emilio Sala was appointed to the Chair of Color Theory and Aesthetics at the Royal Academy of San Fernando—a position created specifically for him. The decision to establish this new chair was prompted by the immense impact of his 1906 treatise—Gramática del Color (Grammar of Color). The format of this note and thematic focus of this site do not allow for a detailed, comprehensive mapping of the maestro’s artistic journey. However, the general consensus is that Emilio Sala y Francés belonged to the generation of artists who revitalized the Spanish art scene of the late 19th century. After gaining renown through the historical painting—in Neoclassical and Romantic styles—that was fashionable in official circles, he made a sharp turn toward painting influenced by Impressionism and Naturalism. Thanks to his free, realistic brushwork and brilliant mastery in rendering natural light as an expressive tonal element, he embarked on a distinguished career in genre, landscape, and portrait painting, becoming a mentor to an entire generation of artists.

(Cecilio Pla y Gallardo)
(Blanco y Negro)
1898-1907

La Charra. 1901

Cecilio Pla y Gallardo (1859–1934) began his artistic education at the San Carlos Academy in Valencia and completed it at the School of Painting, Sculpture, and Engraving of the Royal Academy of Fine Arts of San Fernando in Madrid. After his mandatory trip to Rome in 1880, he traveled through Italy, France, and Portugal. He received numerous awards at National Fine Arts Exhibitions. Like his teacher and friend Emilio Sala (1850–1910), Pla experimented with various genres and techniques. A talented drawer and illustrator, he actively collaborated with publications such as La Ilustración Española y Americana, Blanco y Negro, and Arte y Letras between 1893 and 1910. The artist’s preferred subjects were portraits and genre scenes. He masterfully evoked an atmosphere of peace and tranquility in his compositions, creating a harmonious, captivating, and natural connection connection between the viewer and the depicted scene. After his mentor’s death in 1910, he succeeded him to the professorship at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts of San Fernando. As he began his teaching career, his work took on a freer technique, characterized by the blurred outlines of figures rendered with long, dense, and energetic brushstrokes. During this same period, his work began to shift toward the use of sharper contrasts between light and shadow. As an educator, Cecilio Plá published Cartilla de Arte Pictórico (1914)—a guide for beginning artists in which he advises against mixing paints with white lead, which, in his words, “poisoned good painting.” Nevertheless, he masterfully employed white whenever it served as the dominant element. In short, Cecilio Plá y Gallardo emerges as a superb colorist who applied paint with minimal mixing—an approach undoubtedly shaped by his musical sensibility.
