(Tom Lovell) | 1937 - 1960

Colorado by Louis Bromfield. 1947

Tom Lovell (1909-1997) was an American artist, illustrator for popular magazines, and painter of the American West. Considering himself a “storyteller with a brush, a custodian of the past,” the artist reproduced the entire historical entourage with the utmost authenticity and care. A master of composition and a marvelous physiognomist, he displayed in his life-filled paintings all the nuances of human emotion with experience and imagination. The illustrations presented here, effortlessly lyrical and moderately glamorous, partly reveal the layer of the artist's amazing work associated with publications in glossy magazines.

(Pruett Alexander Carter) | 1933 - 1943

Speed Hound by Arthur Stringer. Ladies' Home Journal, July 1933

Pruett Alexander Carter; 1891-1955)

"Carter went to the Los Angeles Art School and got his first job on Hearst’s New York American; he was later transferred to the Atlanta Georgian. As a step forward toward his ambition to become a magazine illustrator, Carter next became art editor for Good Housekeeping magazine, and eventually was able to assign one of the story manuscripts to himself. From then on, he worked as a freelance illustrator... Carter taught many other illustrators, some at the Grand Central School of Art in New York, others at the Chouinard Art Institute in Los Angeles, where he headed the illustration department for several years. He was elected into the Society of Illustrators’ Hall of Fame in 1988." — The Illustrated Gallery (www.illustratedgallery.com) — Pruett A. Carter

Mead Schaeffer (1898-1980) was an American artist; he studied at the Pratt Institute in Brooklyn and took lessons from Harvey Dunn. From 1922 to 1930, he illustrated literary classics for Dodd, Mead & Co., including Moby Dick, or The White Whale; Typee: or A Peep at Polynesian Life; and Omoo: A Narrative of Adventures in the South Seas by Herman Melville; The Count of Monte Cristo by Alexandre Dumas; Les Misérables by Victor Hugo; and The Black Buccaneer by Stephen W. Meader (Stephen Warren); in the thirties and forties, he collaborated with major periodicals. I would like to highlight the artist's qualities, such as excellent mastery of the subject environment and surroundings, a good sense of texture, and precision of composition, rhythmic form, and plot presentation.
