Neysa Moran McMein (also known as Margery Edna McMein; 1888-1949) was an American portrait artist who studied at the Art Institute of Chicago. In 1914, she continued her studies at the Art Students League in New York City, also working as a fashion designer. In 1915, McMein sold her first cover to The Saturday Evening Post. Almost everything that is exciting and best in a woman is reflected in her cover portraits: blooming youth, exciting beauty, intelligence, and an enigmatic appeal. The covers were very popular and brought the artist many commissions. From 1923 to 1937, Neysa McMain contributed to McCall's, Women's Home Companion, Collier's, Ladies' Home Journal, and McClure's. The artist died of an embolism suffered during cancer surgery in New York City on May 12, 1949.

(The Saturday Evening Post)

Robert Bernard Robinson (1886-1952) studied with renowned illustrator Howard Pyle from 1909 to 1912; he specialized in illustrating magazine covers, starting with the Saturday Evening Post, where he provided illustrations from about 1910 to 1925. Robinson also worked on other publications such as American, American Druggist, The Farm Journal, Liberty, and Redbook. His extensive work for Motor magazine lasted from 1926 to 1952. I like the artist's good-natured sketches — their atmosphere and the playful ease of the characters.

James R. Bingham

The Case of the Restless Redhead by Erle Stanley Gardner. Illustrated by James R. Bingham

Advertising series: Philadelphia Electric Company by James R. Bingham. The Saturday Evening Post September 1950's

James R. Bingham (1917-1971) was an American illustrator and advertising artist. He illustrated The Saturday Evening Post, Good Housekeeping, Esquire, and American Magazine; as an artist, he participated in advertising campaigns for well-known industrial groups and corporations. Bingham's visualizations, and especially his illustrations for the works of detective writer Erle Stanley Gardner (1889-1970), feature a strong dramatic element — an unsettling atmosphere of vibrant uncertainty in the asymmetrical psychodynamics of the unfolding plot of the picture, which is often overlaid with the style of Hollywood noir. In advertising, the artist is diametrically opposed.

Unlike other American illustrators of the 1940s-1960s, who worked hard to create a personal, recognizable style — a marketable brand — Al Parker (1906-1985) cared little about this, readily changing his artistic style and stylistic choices. The only constants were the artist's intense focus on humankind and his sense of connection to the ordinary lives of ordinary people.

Mead Schaeffer (1898-1980) was an American artist who mastered painting technique, artistic form, and rhythm; he was one of the most sought-after and highly paid illustrators in the world. He studied at the Pratt Institute in Brooklyn and took lessons from Harvey Dunn. From 1922 to 1930, he illustrated literary classics published by Dodd, Mead & Co., including Moby Dick, Typee, and Omoo by Herman Melville; The Count of Monte Cristo by Alexandre Dumas; and Les Misérables by Victor Hugo. In the thirties and forties, he collaborated with major periodicals such as The Saturday Evening Post, Good Housekeeping, McCall's, The Ladies Home Journal, The Country Gentleman, Cosmopolitan, and American Magazine.
Mead Schaeffer was introduced to The Saturday Evening Post editor Ben Hibbs by Norman Rockwell, a close friend of Schaeffer's; this introduction led to a collaboration between the artist and the magazine's editors that lasted thirty years. Mead Schaeffer created forty-six covers for the popular weekly.

Elbert McGran Jackson (E.M. Jackson)

Elbert McGran Jackson (1896-1962) was an artist for popular American magazines such as The Saturday Evening Post, The Country Gentleman, Ladies' Home Journal, and Collier's. Elbert McGran is called a master of glamour, and I partly agree with this — the artist's exquisite images of high society ladies are full of charm, but this theme is by no means predominant in his work: at one time I had to look through a huge archive of Saturday Evening Post covers from the beginning of the last century, including those signed with the abbreviation "E.M. Jackson" — which were distinguished by a variety of genre scenes and a range of themes. Indeed, it probably doesn't matter what movement or style a particular artist belongs to; the main thing is that their paintings touch the soul.
