Alice Barber Stephens (1858-1932) was an American draftsman, printmaker, painter, and illustrator. She studied at the Philadelphia School of Design for Women and then at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts. Lack of money forced Barber Stephens to leave the academy in 1880 and work as an engraver, copying drawings and paintings onto wooden boards used as printing plates in publishing. From 1885, after her health deteriorated, Stephens illustrated magazines, first using ink drawing, and later charcoal, oil, and watercolor. Alice Barber Stevens's work has appeared in magazines such as Harper's Young People, Scribner's Monthly, Harper's Weekly, and The Ladies Home Journal.
