The Rich Man and Lazarus by Sir John Everett Millais, engraved by the Brothers Dalziel
(The Parables of our Lord in Good Words, published by Strahan & Co., London and Edinburgh, 1863), Alfred Tennyson).

John Everett Millais (1829-1896) was an English painter and illustrator of the Victorian era. At the age of 11, John Millais entered the Royal Academy Schools, where he studied for six years; in 1896, he was elected its president. He was one of the founders of the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood, whose members sought to emulate the sincerity and simplicity of early art (before Raphael) in their work. Millais's significant contribution to the development of British illustration art is undeniable: in particular, the artist illustrated the very popular book by Strahan & Co., The Parables of our Lord in Good Words (published by Strahan & Co., London and Edinburgh, 1863), as well as works by Anthony Trollope, Robert Williams Buchanan, and Alfred Tennyson.
