Ivan Yakovlevich Bilibin (1876–1942) was a graphic artist (specializing in books and magazines), a theater and poster artist, and an educator. From 1895 to 1898, he studied at the Drawing School of the Society for the Encouragement of the Arts under Jan Fransevich Tsionglinsky; from 1898 to 1900, he studied at the studio-school of Princess Maria Tenisheva under Ilya Repin; and from 1900 to 1904, he attended the Higher Art School of the Academy of Arts as an auditor. The most recognition Bilibin earned as a theater artist and illustrator of Russian fairy tales. The artist’s style can be characterized as an individual expression of Art Nouveau—specifically in its national variant—through the principles of the "Mir Iskusstva" (World of Art) society, of which Ivan Yakovlevich Bilibin was an active member starting in 1900. His work is unmistakable: it features a unified compositional ensemble combined with a refined technique, in which typography and illustration are strictly subordinated to the plane of the page, forming an integral whole with the text.
