William Hurd Lawrence (1866-1938) – was an American artist: watercolorist, landscape and genre painter, magazine illustrator; he was a student of William Ladd Taylor (1854-1926) and Frederic Porter Vinton (1846-1911). At the beginning of the last century, William Hurd Lawrence was one of the significant artists who illustrated Harpers. In 1917, during a tour of South America, the sun beat him into partial paralysis. His right hand hung disabled. Despite the terrible shock, the artist had learned to paint over again with his left hand. Six months after his misfortune, William Hurd Lawrence had attained sufficient skill to have occasional works again accepted by Harper's. William Hurd Lawrence, it seems to me, was able to extremely expressively convey the psychological state of the characters, using flexible and varied plastic forms to coordinate their internal characteristics. However, this is just one of the features, albeit an important one, of the style of the great artist, who for a long time illustrated Harper’s New Monthly Magazine.
