Dean Cornwell (1892-1960) was an American painter, muralist, and illustrator. He studied at the Art Institute of Chicago. He illustrated books and magazines, including Weekly, Cosmopolitan, Good Housekeeping, Life, and the Saturday Evening Post; created murals for twenty community centers; taught at the Art Students League in New York; was president of the Society of Illustrators; and designed war posters and advertising brochures. Academic thoroughness, persuasiveness, and authenticity are the hallmarks of this master's style. "The Dean of Illustrators" is what his contemporaries called Dean Cornwell, the greatest perfectionist artist of the early twentieth century.
