André Castaigne (French: Jean Alexandre Michel André Castaigne; 1861-1929) — French artist and engraver; He studied under Jean-Léon Gérôme and Alexandre Cabanel at the Académie des Beaux-Arts in Paris; from 1890 to 1894, he spent the years in the United States, where he was director of an art school in Baltimore; in 1891, he tried himself in the field of illustration. The artist's images of the West, first published in The Century Magazine, attracted the attention of the American public and brought him some fame and recognition; he subsequently completed more than 160 illustrations for Century. Upon returning to France, he remained with Century as a permanent European correspondent. André Castaigne also collaborated with a number of other well-known American magazines, including Harper's Monthly Magazine from 1901 to 1913, partly as an artist-reporter.
