(William Hatherell; 1855-1928) — British painter, artist-illustrator; collaborated with the magazines The Graphic, Harper's, Scribner's Magazine, McClure's Magazine, and The Century Magazine. He illustrated the works of William Shakespeare, Thomas Hardy, Robert Louis Stevenson, George Eliot (Mary Ann Evans), Mark Twain, Perceval Gibbon, Gilbert Chesterton, and Gilbert Parker (Sir Horatio Gilbert George Parker; 1862-1932). William Hatherell, like any great master, was a perfectionist in his art. Acknowledging full well that the print quality would be imperfect, the artist nonetheless thoughtfully and carefully crafted every brushstroke, and every detail in each of his paintings; using subtle shading and creating soft transitions between color and background, he highlighted subtle facial expressions, achieving the desired facial expressiveness and psychological authenticity of character. His paintings sound like music performed by a virtuoso master; when reproduced, they inevitably lose something, like a rebroadcast performance of a good orchestra, but it is still a reliable, and sometimes the only, way for the general public to approach the artist's works. Incidentally, Hatherell's academic approach to illustration did not allow for any free interpretation of the writer's work.
