Juan Martínez Abades (1862–1920) was a Spanish painter, illustrator, and musician. He began his education at the Instituto Jovellanos in his hometown of Gijón; in 1880, he continued his studies at the Special School of Painting, Sculpture, and Engraving of San Fernando in Madrid, remaining there until 1887. From 1888 to 1890, thanks to a scholarship from the Diputación de Oviedo, he studied in Italy. Upon returning to Spain, Martínez Abades won a second-class medal at the 1890 National Exhibition of Fine Arts for his painting El Viático a bordo and opened a studio in Madrid that same year. Much of his work comprises seascapes, harbor scenes, and depictions of the Cantabrian coast and the coastal landscapes of Atlantic Galicia. From 1894 onwards, he illustrated the weekly magazine Blanco y Negro. A combination of the romantic nature of the sea and a realistic portrayal of arduous human labor became the hallmark of his finest works. Let us examine the industrial theme in the artist's work through the painting Los carboneros (The Coal Heavers), which depicts the moment of bunkering—loading coal onto a steamship anchoring in the roadstead. The diagonal composition, rising from bottom-left to top-right, creates a vector of strenuous physical movement involving exertion and upward effort. Diffused light and a complex color palette—ranging from shades of dirty gray to the coal-black dominating the center of the composition—establish the painting's unsettling rhythm and mood. Through pointedly naturalistic details of the setting—the low, leaden sky of an overcast day, the oily, murky waters of the bay, the thick black smoke from tugboat funnels, and the tangibly heavy, damp air thick with coal dust—the artist masterfully recreates the harsh reality of everyday life in Gijón.
