Sea Voyagers of the Northern Ocean by Agnes C. Laut. 1906

Stanley Massey Arthurs (1877-1950) was an American artist, illustrator, and muralist; a student of Howard Pyle (Drexel Institute, Wilmington School of Illustrators); he began publishing as an illustrator in 1899. By nature, Stanley Arthurs was an artist-researcher, a restorer of time. His skillful paintings — with characters sometimes unexpectedly recognizable in behavior but inextricably fused with the surrounding attributes of the represented era — allow the viewer to experience the atmosphere of past years in a living dynamic, to see an almost documentary image of time.
